Lithuania has the reason to be proud in the field of endoprosthesis. According to the specialists of the National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health (NHIF), compared to other European countries, there are no queues in Lithuania of the patients waiting for joint replacement surgeries, while in other countries the residents have no other choice but to wait for their turn in a queue for joint surgery even throughout the year.
"According to the data of the National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health, last year, the residents of Lithuania did not need at all to wait for hip replacement surgeries. Whereas in Poland, for example, patients wait on average more than a year for hip replacement surgeries, in Estonia – more than 9 months, in Spain – 5 months. As per this indicator, we beat Norway, Finland, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands", – says Lina Reinartienė, the Head of the Healthcare Facilities Supply Department of the NHIF.
According to her, a similar situation is with regard to the waiting queues for knee joint replacement surgeries. Compared to Lithuanians who on average waited only 2 months last year for knee endoprosthesis surgery, Polish patients waited one year and a half, Estonians – more than a year. Lithuania was leading over such countries as Portugal, Spain, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Italy in terms of an average duration of waiting for these surgeries.
"Considering the fact of huge differences of waiting queues between Lithuania and other European countries, there is no wonder that patients from other countries arrive to Lithuania for joint surgery. In Lithuania they are promptly provided with medical services of the highest level", – says L. Reinartienė.
According to her, significantly increased funding for endoprosthetics from the budget of the CHIF is not the only reason why Lithuania managed to achieve such excellent results. A special queue management system introduced by the NHIF is another reason of such great results. The system allows medical institutions to plan their work more quickly, to manage patient flows.
The medics who perform joint replacement surgeries in Lithuanian medical institutions also state that in Lithuania the queues for endoprosthetic surgeries are rapidly shrinking. "Compared to the situation five years ago when Lithuanian patients had sometimes wait even more than one year, today they no longer have to wait so long. With a few exceptions, the patients no longer have to wait for several months for their turn in the queues in all hospitals, for a visit to majority of doctors, while being subjected to pain", – notices a doctor Giedrius Kvederas, who specialises in the field of orthopaedics and traumatology.
The NHIF recalls that patients can choose by themselves a medical institution where they will undergo a joint replacement surgery and where they will be prescribed with an endoprosthesis. Queues are different depending on a medical institution. It is therefore always worth to choose a medical institution with a shorter waiting queue. In such case the patients will not have to wait long until they will be prescribed with an endoprosthesis, and they will sooner undergo the surgery. Furthermore, even after the registration of an application for a joint, before the patient will be prescribed with an endoprosthesis, the patient may submit to the NHIF a free-form application for a change of medical institution.
According to the data of the NHIF, last year, about 9.5 thousand hip and knee joint replacement surgeries were performed in Lithuania. A similar number of endoprosthetic surgeries of this type are every year performed by the medics of our country.
