Dreams of infertile families come true: more than 200 babies already were born
237 new-borns already were born after the initiation of compensation of medically assisted insemination services from the budget of the Compulsory Health Insurance Fund (CHIF) in Lithuania in the last year. The specialists of the National Health Insurance Fund under the Ministry of Health (NHIF) note that more and more infertile families exercise the state compensated option of having their own babies.
"Even 168 women successfully gave birth to their babies after the provision of medically assisted insemination services compensated from the budget of the NHIF to the couples unable to have children was initiated from April 2017. Triplets were born to 3 families, twins were born to 63 couples and new-borns from single delivery were born to 102 couples until the 3rd of October of this year. We are really happy to see such results. They show that many Lithuanian infertile couples successfully take advantage of the invaluable opportunity to have children", - says Daiva Berūkštienė, the Head of the Division of Services Expertise and Control of the NHIF.
According to her, almost 8 thousand of various medically assisted insemination services were provided to more than 2 700 infertile people (1 420 women and 1 326 men) in a year and a half when medically assisted insemination services are compensated from the budget of the CHIF. A full package of these services consists of consultations of obstetrician gynaecologist and of the procedures of medically assisted insemination. Embryonic preimplantation genetic diagnostics can be done free of charge in certain cases before embryo transfer to the female body. Furthermore, the patients are also offered compensations for some expensive genetic tests. More than 1 million 400 thousand euros were allocated from the budget of the CHIF to finance all of these services in the course of this and of the last year.
The NHIF compensates not only the services of medically assisted insemination, but also medical products that are often needed to stimulate the ovaries in order for women to conceive. From April 2017 to October 2018 the total of 1 036 female patients were taking such medical products and the costs of the CHIF intended to cover the expenses for the said medical products amounted to 676 thousand euros.
The NHIF recalls that the medically assisted insemination services compensated from the budget of the NHIF that are designed for the families unable to have children are provided by both public and private health care facilities in Lithuania, but only by those that have the necessary licenses and have entered into the agreement with the NHIF. Such facilities include Vilnius University Hospital Santaros Klinikos, UAB "Baltic American Therapy and Surgery Clinic", UAB "Northway medical centres", UAB "Fertility Centre", Lithuanian, US and Israeli "Vaisingumo klinika", UAB ,,Jolsana".
